Major Northumberland road closed for six hours after lorry bursts into flames

A major road was closed for around six hours after a lorry burst into flames.

Firefighters and police rushed to the A69 in Northumberland[1] at around 10.20am on Tuesday after receiving reports of a vehicle blaze. They discovered a lorry on fire between A686 at Haydon Bridge and the Hexham Road junction at Warden.

Three fire engines attended the scene and the road was closed in both directions while the crews put out the flames. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service[2] attended the scene at 10.16am and left by 12 noon.

However Northumbria Police and Highways England kept the road closed until around 4.40pm while the lorry was recovered and the area was cleared.

The road has now reopened to the public and temporary traffic lights are in place.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police[3] said: "At 10.20am today (Tuesday) we received a report of a vehicle fire on the A69 at Haydon Bridge, in Northumberland[4]. Emergency services attended the scene and no-one was found to have been injured in the incident."
