Maldon Oak Corner roundabout crash sees man rescued from lorry

The vehicle overturned at Oak Corner roundabout and blocked entry to Maldon Road from Danbury and Bicknacre. 

The incident in the early hours of the afternoon yesterday, August 29.

Traffic was slow as a result of Maldon Road being closed both ways from the B1418 Southend Road (Oak Corner) to Conduit Lane.

Firefighters had to rescue the lorry driver as he was trapped inside.

An Essex County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on Bryants Lane, Woodham Mortimer at 1.33pm yesterday. 

“On arrival, crews reported a lorry had overturned and a man was trapped inside. Crews worked to rescue the man and make the scene safe by 2pm.”

The police confirmed their attendance and cleared the incident in just under six hours.

A spokesman said: “We were called to reports of an overturned lorry on the A414 near Woodham Mortimer at about 1.30pm on Thursday, August 29.

“The road was closed for several hours by officers while the vehicle was covered.

“The road was cleared by Maldon District Council and the vehicle was recovered. Officers reopened the road at about 7.20pm.”

The ambulance service has also confirmed nobody involved needed to be taken to the hospital. 

A spokesman said: “We were called just after 1.30pm on Thursday, August 29, with reports of lorry overturning on the A414 near Maldon.

“An ambulance, ambulance officer vehicle and Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

“After being extricated from the lorry, the driver was assessed and did not require transportation to hospital.”

Maldon MP John Whittingdale said: “I am glad to hear that no one was injured yesterday as a lorry was sadly overturned on Oak Corner roundabout, blocking access to Maldon Road (A414) from Danbury.

“Thankfully the driver has emerged unscathed and I understand roads have now reopened. I pay tribute to the emergency services for their response, particularly the air ambulance, fire service and police presence at the scene.”
