Speed cameras installed in school zones in Hopewell to slow down drivers
HOPEWELL, Va. (WWBT) – Attention drivers in Hopewell: speed cameras have been installed in several school zones to slow down people behind the wheel.
The cameras will start enforcing on Wednesday.
It’s all part of Hopewell Police’s School Zone Enforcement Program, which installed seven cameras at Carter G. Woodson Middle School, Harry E. James Elementary School and Hopewell High School.
“I definitely think that them taking the steps of, you know, the cameras and like the speed traps, that will definitely cut down on speeding,” said mother Tammella Tims.
Tammella Tims is a mother who has lived in Hopewell her entire life and knows how fast people drive in these school zones.
“When I am driving with my child, the risk of getting T-boned is very high, like if I have the green light, before I pull off I’ll [look] left and right, double check, because you never know,” Tims said.
The cameras record every car that passes by and detect its speed. If someone is going too fast, the camera tracks their license plate and mails a $100 citation.
Tims urges people to slow down before someone gets hurt.
“You’re rushing to go nowhere, so just think about that before you get in your car,” she said.
Violations from the cameras don’t add points to the violator’s license.
