The top roads in Northern Ireland where drivers are caught speeding

There were more than 70,000 people who were caught speeding by Road Safety Partnership Cameras across Northern Ireland in 2023, with some roads catching far more people than others.

According to the Northern Ireland Road Safety Partnership statistics for 2023, there were 71,913 drivers caught speeding with mobile camera vans catching 67,227, fixed cameras 2,967 and average speed cameras 1,721. This resulted in 37,532 people having to take a speed awareness course.

The most speeding drivers were caught in 30mph zones where there were 48,775 detections, with 10,893 in 40mph, 175 in 45mph, 3,312 in 50mph, 7,125 in 60mph and 1,635 in 70mph.

The highest speed recorded on the roads in 2023 was 123mph on a 60mph road, while another was caught driving 82mph in a 30mph zone.

Those aged 40 to 54 were most likely to be caught speeding with 22,432 detections, followed by those aged 25 to 29 with 20,563 and those aged 55 to 69 with 16,691.

The roads where the most people were caught speeding by mobile speeding enforcement vans were;

  1. Shore Road Eden to Belfast – 3,204

  2. Frosses/Crankhill Rd Ballymena/Ballymoney – 1,748

  3. A1 Sprucefield Roundabout to Sheepbridge – 1,691

  4. Culmore Road, Derry – 1,558

  5. A55 Outer Ring, Belfast (Parkway to Belvoir Road) – 1,481

  6. Dungiven Road, Derry – 1,139

  7. A8, Larne – 1,132

  8. A2 Belfast to Bangor Road – 1,027

  9. Saintfield Rd, Upp Galwally, Belfast – 1,020

  10. Glenshane Road, Maghera – 991

The roads where the most people were caught speeding by fixed speeding cameras were;

  1. Upper Newtownards Road, Belfast – 1,490

  2. Springfield Road, Belfast – 962

  3. Antrim Road, Belfast – 515

The roads where the most people were caught speeding by average speed cameras were;

  1. A2 Belfast to Bangor – 1,379

  2. A24 Saintfield Road, Belfast – 342
