Woman in 80s sustained ‘serious facial fractures’ in crash
On Monday (August 19) Thames Valley Police has confirmed the woman “sustained serious facial fractures and a broken arm” and is “still in hospital at this time”.
The crash on Thursday (August 15) left three other people injured, however there were no fatalities.
The incident occurred on Benson Lane, AKA the A4074, at around 3.10pm Thursday afternoon.
Six vehicles were involved in the crash with several cars spotted at the scene, with excessive damage including smashed glass and torn metal.
Photographs show that several vehicles were badly hit in the incident causing harm to the vehicles with some car windows cracked.
Thames Valley Police, South Central Ambulance Service and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service all attended the scene.
On Thursday evening a Thames Valley Police spokesperson said: “This is a road traffic collision involving six vehicles, first reported at around 3.10pm.
“One person has serious injuries and three others have minor injuries, no fatalities though.
“The road is closed in both directions between the A4130 roundabout near Crowmarsh Gifford and Church Road, Benson.”
Officers cordoned off the road with cones, closing both sides of the road as traffic was ground to a halt.
The location of the crash caused a large build-up of cars in the area and bus routes were diverted while the incident was dealt with.
At the time onlooker Zihan Zhou said: “I live not far from A4074 in Benson and heard loads of sirens passing by.
“There seems to be more cars parked there than those involved in the accident. The blue Audi seems fine. The white Renault van had some rear bumper damage.
“The hatch behind the Land Rover is pretty badly damaged and there was an old lady being treated by paramedics.
“In total, there seem to be quite a few passengers around.
“There is a very large trailer-type vehicle which seems like it might have detached from the vehicle towing it.”
Following the incident, one person wrote online: “Accident waiting to happen unfortunately, with the road closure in to Benson.”
Another person described traffic in the area as “chaos”, writing: “Traffic is horrendous too and from Wallingford[1] over the bridge, up Clacks Lane queuing for ages, chaos.”
