A49 near Hereford closed for more than seven hours after serious crash
A major road on the southern outskirts of Hereford was closed for over seven hours after a serious car and lorry crash today (Saturday, September 7). The A49 was shut between the B4399 and the A466[1] from around 8.30am until traffic cleared shortly before 3.45pm.
West Mercia Police warned motorists of long delays earlier in the day and advised drivers to avoid the area. National Highways issued two diversion routes[2] for motorists to follow.
The road closure led to long delays in both directions as traffic backed up around the scene of the crash. Traffic officers were in attendance to help with the flow of vehicles.
West Mercia Police said earlier today: “Please be aware that due to a serious road traffic collision on the A49 between the turning for the A466 and turning for Callow a road closure is currently in place. Officers are currently at the scene and ask for you to find an alternative route.”
National Highways added: “The A49 in Herefordshire is closed in both directions between the A466 near Kingsthorne and the B4399 near Grafton following a serious collision.
“Emergency services including West Mercia police are in attendance. Service providers are also in attendance assisting with traffic management. The closure is expected to remain ongoing for several hours.”
