Drug-driving arrest after M49 crash leaves family in hospital

A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after a crash involving two lorries and a car near Bristol left a family of four in hospital. The collision, involving a green DAF lorry, a blue and white Volvo lorry and a silver Nissan Note, happened on the M49 near Hallen, south Gloucestershire[1], at about 4pm on Friday (August 30).

A 38-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman and two children who were in the car were taken to hospital. The woman has potentially life-threatening injuries, while a nine-year-old girl is receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, Avon and Somerset Police said.

The man and a younger girl have been discharged but remain with their family members at the hospital. Neither lorry driver was injured.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink/drugs, causing serious injury by careless/inconsiderate driving and obstructing a constable in the execution of their duty. He remains in police custody.

A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the limit for controlled drugs and later released under investigation pending blood tests. The road was reopened by about 2am on Saturday.

Police have called for witnesses or those with dashcam footage of the crash to come forward. Anyone who may be able to assist police is asked to call 101 quoting the log number 724 of August 30.
