Man charged after pregnant nurse lost her life on Edinburgh M8 days after baby shower
A man has been charged after a heavily pregnant nurse was killed in a horror HGV crash on the M8 just days before Christmas. Eve Brown, 41, died when her Kia Sorento collided with a Tesco lorry near junction 1 of the motorway, at Hermiston Gait, on Monday, December 18, 2023.
Emergency services[1] rushed to the scene, but Eve was pronounced dead. The motorway was closed for over nine hours as a full investigation was conducted.
On Wednesday, Police Scotland announced that a 58-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear in court[4] at a later date.
The Daily Record[5] reported that Eve, from Bellshill, leaves behind two young daughters, aged three and four at the time of the incident. Just two days before the tragedy, she had celebrated her baby shower, smiling in a sequin dress as she showed off her bump with friends and family.
Following Eve’s tragic death, heartfelt tributes were paid by devastated friends as the local community rallied around to support the family. Emma Reynolds wrote: “Rest in peace Eve. Sending my love & healing to your daughters.”
Udoka Chinwe said: “How do we say farewell? How do we say rest in peace? Your friends and family celebrated your baby shower, only for you to be snatched away from us. Can we get one more hug? One more dance? You only ever had nice things to say. I love you.”
Somto Christabel Emy-Amaugo said: “She wasn’t just a woman, she was a woman with a large heart. My heart hurts. How do you throw your big, baby shower party on the 16th and exit on the 18th?
“I will miss your wonderful, opera-singing voice, your praise sessions, your hearty laughter, your larger-than-life attitude, and your most beautiful smile. Thank you for being so kind to us in the short time you passed through our lives. I will remember you, Lady Eve.”

A local charity, Charity Dashing Hounds Bellshill, organised collections for the donation of presents and clothes for Eve’s two young children. They said: “Eve is survived by her two young girls. We desperately want to help this family as they come to terms with the devastating and tragic loss of their mum, sister and daughter.
“The family would be more than grateful and appreciative of any help in the form of toys, clothes, food or any donations at all especially with Christmas in a couple of days.
“I know times are tough, more so at this time of year, but if anyone can help please private message me and I will get back to you to arrange collections or drop-offs.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 58-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with road traffic offences following a fatal crash on the M8 near junction 1.
“The crash happened around 9.10am on Monday, December 18, 2023, involving a HGV and a car. The driver of the car, a 41-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man is due to appear at court at a later date.”
