Monster pothole at Glasgow M8 Kingston Bridge off-slip dubbed ‘the grand canyon’

A huge pothole near the busy M8 has reportedly caused damage to multiple vehicles including a “brand new Porsche”.

The “crater” is said to be on the off-slip at junction 20, the south end of Kingston Bridge, and is wreaking havoc for motorists, some of whom have been forced to splash out hundreds on repairs.

Lewis Smith says he has helped three people who’d gone through the pothole and damaged their vehicle, and didn’t know what to do.

He said: “The pothole has severe sharp edges which caused three vehicles to burst tyres as it takes up almost half of the nearside lane.

“The three vehicles who burst their tyres were slightly older ladies in their car themselves and were at a loose end as to what to do so I volunteered to get pictures for them as it is a dangerous bit of road.

“None of the ladies had spare tyres in their car so had to await recovery, one vehicle was a brand new Porsche which had a puncture and cost £400.00 for a new tyre.”

The pothole has reportedly damaged at least three vehicles.

Calling for urgent action to repair the fault, he added: “This is a slip road from a motorway, it’s absolutely disgraceful.

“The two lanes at this point are very narrow so it is very difficult to avoid it. A nervous driver will hit that pothole and that could possibly cause them to swerve and hit another car or crash into the barrier, with the possibility of children in the car.

“Just think of people’s lives.”

Lewis shared the post on Facebook group Potholes Make Glasgow, who regularly campaign for the city’s roads to be repaired, and it’s left several motorists in disgust.

One person said: “That ain’t no pothole, that’s a crater.”

Another added: “My son had his tyre shredded by that on way home from work.”

Transport Scotland and AMEY, who have responsibility for the road, have been approached for comment.
