Tragedy as pedestrian dies after being hit by lorry and cars on M65
A man has died after being struck by a lorry and a number of cars on the M65. The tragedy happened at around 9pm on Friday night (September 6).
Lancashire Police said the pedestrian was " involved in a collision with an HGV and a number of other vehicles" between junctions five (Blackburn) and six (Accrington) on the eastbound carriageway.
Emergency services raced to the scene but the man in his 40s was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The motorway closed in both directions whilst police dealt with the aftermath and began their enquiries.
It only re-opened at 4pm on Saturday afternoon, almost 24 hours after the incident. Diversions were in place throughout Friday night and Saturday leading to long delays.
Lancs Police have thanked motorists for their "co-operation and understanding." They are now also appealing for anyone who may be able to help their investigation, to come forward.
Sgt Pete Fyans, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “This collision has sadly resulted in a man’s death and would appeal to anyone who either saw what happened or who has any dashcam or mobile footage to get in touch.
“I am very aware of the significant disruption closing the motorway will have caused but I hope people will understand why we have needed to do this as we dealt with what was an extremely complex and traumatic incident and I would like to thank people for their co-operation and understanding.”
Anyone with information or footage is asked to Lancashire Police on 101 and quoting log 1512 of September 6. Alternatively it can be emailed to their Serious Collision Investigation Unit at [email protected][2]
