£2.1m speed camera schemes earmarked for two major Lancs roads
Brand new multi-million pound speed camera schemes will be installed on two major roads in Lancashire[1].
The schemes which total £2.1million, will see speed enforcement cameras implemented on the A682 Colne[2] Road in Burnley[3] and Brierfield and the A583 Blackpool[4] Road in Kirkham[5], through to Peel Hill. The installations are set to move forward in part due to Burnley residents coming forward.
Following community engagement here, the Colne Road scheme is underway as residents made it clear the safety of motorists on A682 should be a county council priority. Therefore, it will address road safety risks by targeting excessive speeds and anti-social driving behaviour along the A-road.

The money will be funded from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund programme, which has wider strategic incentives. This is to improve the sense of community in north-east Burnley, but is subject to final approval from the Government.
The Levelling Up East Lancashire programme consists of £5m funding from Lancashire County Council[7] and a provisional £50m award from the Government, delivering a range of improvements through three connected projects. In the Fylde[8], the A583 scheme is being funded by Department for Transport’s Safer Roads fund.
Here, it aims to improve safety on the 50 most dangerous A-roads in England, following a successful bid to fund road safety improvements on the stretch.
It is hoped work will begin in April 2025 for both roads and be completed by December 2025. This week, members of the county council’s cabinet will be asked to agree to advertise the contract for the work to take place.
The contract will cover the design and build of both schemes, as well as the ongoing maintenance.
Cllr Rupert Swarbrick, cabinet member for Highways and Transport[9], said: “Both of these roads have a history of serious collisions where excessive speed has been a factor and we understand how concerned local communities are about their safety record. Residents in Burnley in particular have strongly voiced strong calls for safety improvements on the A682 Colne Road through our community engagement.
“The scheme we are developing shows that we are listening to our residents, and the new cameras will help to save lives and make these two A roads safer for everyone.”
