Average speed cameras set for A361

Devon County Council confirms new safety measures as part of the Safer Roads Fund project

Devon County Council (DCC) has confirmed that an average speed camera system will soon be activated on the A361 North Devon Link Road.

This development is part of the government-funded Safer Roads Fund project, which aims to enhance road safety in the region.

DCC is also investigating potential enforcement sites on the A361, north of Barnstaple, to further improve safety.

Over the past 12-24 months, DCC has installed new safety cameras at eight locations across Devon, with a ninth site set to be operational by the end of the month.

Most of these new cameras are direct replacements for older units, which were originally installed based on local collision data.

Some of these older sites date back over 20 years, and DCC regularly reviews their effectiveness to determine whether they should be removed or retained.

DCC considers the removal of cameras when changes in the road environment make them unnecessary, but any new sites are selected based on the last five years of collision data and speed compliance surveys.

The council explained that more camera replacements will happen in stages as needed, and while further new sites may be identified in the future, no additional locations are confirmed at this time.

The nine safety camera sites include:

Exeter Road, Exmouth – Replacement of an older speed camera in need of repair.
Ashburton Road, Totnes – Replacement of an outdated speed camera.
Exeter Road, Okehampton – Replacement of an older speed camera.
Bridge Road, Exeter – Reinstatement of a speed camera removed temporarily due to roadworks.
Topsham Road/Burnthouse Lane, Exeter – Replacement of an older red light camera.
Topsham Road/Barrack Road, Exeter – A new red light camera installed at a high-injury collision site.
Alphington Road/Church Road, Exeter – Replacement of a red light camera in need of repair.
Clovelly Road, Bideford – A new camera responding to collisions at a cluster site near Atlantic Village, replacing an older camera on Heywood Road.
A379 near Newcourt Way (Ikea), Exeter – A new red light and speed camera set to be operational by the end of the month, addressing injury collisions at the junction.

DCC stated that older camera sites will continue to be replaced as needed, and additional sites could be added following further collision investigations.

However, no new locations have been confirmed at this time.
