Birmingham ‘drink drive’ arrest after pedestrian killed in crash near Baggies ground

A pedestrian has been killed after being hit by a car ‘which then failed to stop’ in Birmingham. The man, said to be in his 40s, was walking across Birmingham^[1] Road, by the BP garage, when he was hit by the vehicle, just before 9pm on Saturday.

The driver initially stopped but then drove away, West Midlands Police said. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the victim was pronounced dead on the roadside.

An investigation was launched and at around 5am on Sunday, a man aged 64 was arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink. He remains in custody.

West Midlands Police^[3] said: “A man has been arrested after a pedestrian died after being hit by a car on Birmingham Road, West Bromwich, last night. The man in his 40s sadly died at the scene after being struck by a car, near to The Hawthorns^[4], just before 9pm. His family has been informed and is being supported.

“The driver initially stopped at the scene, but then drove away. At around 5am today, a man aged 64 was arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink.

“He remains in custody today. A Mitsubishi car has also been recovered as part of the investigation, and the road has now been re-opened.”

Vishay Singh, from the BP garage, said: “I came here around 10 minutes after it happened and there was a lot of police and ambulance vans. They were trying to do CPR.

“The police asked me for CCTV and I gave it to them. They got the car’s registration.

“The police closed the area off from 9pm to 5am.”
