Celtic fan killed on M6 motorway inquest opens

A football fan died after he was struck by “a number of vehicles” on the M6 after watching his team play, an inquest heard.

Celtic fan John Burns, 22, from Renfrewshire, was killed on the motorway on the outskirts of Carlisle on 14 September.

It is believed the 22-year-old had boarded the wrong bus after watching his team play Hearts in the Scottish Championship in Glasgow.

Assistant coroner for Cumbria, Dr Nicholas Shaw, told an inquest in Cockermouth that the hearing would be paused until an accident investigation had been carried out.
