Council responds to criticism over new A361 speed cameras

New speed cameras on North Devon Link Road draw mixed reactions from local residents

Devon County Council (DCC) has responded to public criticism following the announcement of new average speed cameras along the A361 North Devon Link Road.

The Gazette first reported the news earlier this week, sparking a wave of negative reactions on social media, particularly on the Gazette’s Facebook page.

Many local residents voiced their frustration, suggesting the cameras are more focused on raising revenue than improving safety.

One user commented: “That’s all it is about, making more money out of the motorist.” Another added: “They aren’t safety cameras. They are money-making machines to rob working people. It’s pathetic.”

A further comment read: “If only this was actually for improved safety and not about money…”

Despite the negative comments, some supported the installation, with one user saying: “After driving a lorry on various A roads and motorways including roadworks which have these cameras, I don’t see a problem, if you stick to the legal limit there’s nothing to worry about.”

In response to the feedback, a DCC spokesperson explained the purpose of the cameras: “The new Average Speed Camera system on the A361 between South Molton and Barnstaple is being delivered as part of the A361 North Devon Link Road improvement project.

“The national speed limit here is not being reduced. However, the need for camera enforcement on the new widened multi-lane sections, was identified in the early options and public consultation stages of the project’s development.

“Over the last five years this section of the A361 has seen 20 road traffic collisions, leading to 45 people being injured. Devon County Council does not financially benefit from speed camera offences, as fines are paid to central Government. But we do want speeds to reduce on this road for the safety of its users.”

The new camera system is part of the wider Safer Roads Fund project, aimed at enhancing safety on key routes across the region.

DCC is also exploring additional enforcement sites north of Barnstaple as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety.
