Elderly pedestrian in critical condition after being struck by bus on Jesmond Dene Road

An elderly pedestrian remains in a critical condition after a collision in Newcastle on Monday.

At around 12pm yesterday, emergency services were called to the A189 Jesmond Dene Road[1] after reports of a collision close to the junction with Beatty Avenue. The Great North Air Ambulance Service[2] (GNAAS) helicopter also landed on the Town Moor to provide medical care to the casualty involved in the incident.

It was reported that a red single-decker bus had been travelling east when, for reasons yet to be established, it struck a male pedestrian on the road. The man, in his 70s, was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains in a critical condition.

The man’s next of kin have been informed. The bus driver remained at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries, and the road remained closed for several hours.

Officers from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit have launched a full investigation and have issued an appeal for anyone with information to come forward. They are particularly keen to hear from any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police, including motorists who may have dashcam footage.

Northumbria Police[3] have urged anyone with information about the incident to get in touch by sending a direct message on social media, or using the live chat or ‘Report’ section of the Force’s website, quoting log number NP-20241028-0362. Witnesses can also contact police by calling 101.

A spokesperson for Go North East said: “One of our vehicles was involved in an incident on Jesmond Dene Road around 11:50 AM on Monday. Our team is fully cooperating with police at the scene to support their enquiries, and our thoughts are with those involved and their families during this difficult time.”
