A serious crash on the M6 led to dozens of drivers ignoring the lane closures and putting the lives of emergency services workers at risk, police said.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed last night (25 October) due to a multi-vehicle crash close to junction 31 at Samlesbury. There were significant delays.

Police have now confirmed that six people were treated for minor injuries as a result of the crash.

It was also reported that a number of drivers ignored the lane closures in place to deal with the incident and so put the lives of emergency services, and the public, at risk.

Police said that eighty-seven vehicles were caught ignoring restrictions and drivers will be reported.

A spokesperson for police said: “Officers from Team 3 attended a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the M6 northbound at J31 with reports of a person trapped. Police, the fire service, traffic officers and the ambulance service all attended and six people were treated with minor injuries.

“Additional police resources were required due to a small minority of motorists breaching the Red Xs in lanes three and four, putting the lives of emergency services and the public at risk.

“Eighty-seven vehicles were caught and the drivers will be reported.”
