New images have been issued of the lorry which fell from a bridge on the M6. Emergency services were called to the Thewall Viaduct on Monday, September 30 just before 7pm.

It followed reports a lorry had crashed off the bridge[1] between junction 20 and 21. A “complex repair operation” is underway on the motorway after the HGV fell around 60 metres off the Thelwall Viaduct, according Highways England.

Firefighters applied water to cool the HGV and used bunding to contain a leak of approximately 1000 litres of bio-diesel from the fuel tanks of the vehicle. National Highways said a specialist recovery operation for the lorry has been organised, with vehicles said to be on their way to the scene.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service issued more photos of the scene at around 11am, Tuesday, October 1. The images the lorry twisted on the ground and severe damage.

The driver escaped with what is being described by Cheshire Police as non life-threatening injuries. Two lanes remain closed and there is queueing traffic due to emergency barrier repairs, according to traffic management system Inrix.

There is also congestion past junction 19 near Knutsford. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the incident on Monday evening and the carriageway was fully closed as they dealt with the incident.

A spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to reports of a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) that had left the carriageway of the M6 northbound between Junction 20 and 21, close to the Thelwall Viaduct.

“On arrival, they found that a HGV had left the carriageway and overturned on an embankment, falling approximately 60 metres. Crews used technical rescue equipment to lower themselves and reach the casualty, who was handed over to the care of attending paramedics.

“Crews have applied water to cool the HGV and are using bunding to contain a leak of approximately 1000 litres of bio-diesel from the fuel tanks of the vehicle. While the carriageway was fully closed, lanes one and two have since been re-opened.”

The latest update at 12.12pm from traffic monitoring site Inrix said: “Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to emergency barrier repairs and earlier accident, a lorry involved on M6 Northbound from J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) to J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston). Congestion to back past J19 (Knutsford).

“Lanes three and four (of four) are closed. Complex recovery work of the lorry remains ongoing.”
