New permanent speed camera to be installed on busy Aberdeen road

A permanent speed camera is being installed along a busy Aberdeen^[1] road after a survey found over two thirds of drivers were speeding.

Work is underway to install the fixed camera on the A944^[2] in Kingswells^[3], with the location having been a core enforcement site for Police Scotland’s Safety Camera Unit^[4] since 2021.

It will change from a mobile location, being serviced by a member of staff using the detection equipment from within an enforcement van, to a fixed roadside camera.

The installation is due to take two weeks to complete, thereafter the camera will be subject to a period of testing before any speeding offences are detected and progressed.

The fixed camera will be positioned on the Eastbound carriageway travelling towards Aberdeen.

It has the ability to be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and police hope the enhanced enforcement capability will lower speeds at the location.

Eric Dunion, Unit Manager said: “Whilst we have enforced at this location for several years, mobile enforcement can only cover a limited number of hours per week.

“The last speed survey conducted on the A944 near Kingswells was disappointing highlighting that 928 vehicles a week were travelling at least 15% mph over the speed limit with 67.7% of vehicles travelling above the speed limit.

“When the opportunity then arose to trial this fixed camera and after reviewing collisions and vehicle speeds on the A944 near Kingswells the decision was made to install it there.

“Our colleagues at Aberdeen City Council fully support this change in technology as we are working towards the same aim of making our roads safer for all users.”
