Northumberland road expected to be closed for several hours after lorry overturns

The A697 in Northumberland remains closed in both directions and is expected to be for several hours after a lorry overturned early on Friday morning.

Northumbria Police[1] received a report at 1:40am this morning that a vehicle had overturned on the A697 at Alnwick Moor in Northumberland[2]. The situation is ongoing, with a recovery effort under way to remove the vehicle from the carriageway so the road can reopen.

After earlier reports of heavy traffic, traffic in the area is now coping well with the road closure.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services attended and no-one is believed to have been injured.

“Work is ongoing to recover the vehicle from the carriageway. A diversion remains in place and motorists should look to use alternative routes.”

A spokesperson for Northumberland County Council[3] said: “Recovery of an overturned tanker on the A697 near the New Moor House crossroads is continuing. Teams are currently draining the tanker before it can be removed from the ditch. The A697 road remains closed between the New Moor House crossroads and the Bridge of Aln and is likely to be shut for several hours. Diversions are in place.”

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were also contacted for comment.
