Police renew warnings over HGV fuel thefts

In total, four incidents have been reported in lorry parks or laybys along the A14 since 17 October including overnight thefts at Haughley, Creeting St Peter, Creeting St Mary and Herringswell Road, Kentford.

Supt Matthew Carney said: “Thieves are damaging and breaking fuel caps in a bid to get to the fuel and I would urge any lorry drivers and haulage company owners to take steps to prevent themselves from becoming victims.

“If you are a victim, please report the incident as soon as possible. Equally, if you witness any suspicious activity, for example people tampering with lorries late at night, please report this straight away via 999 as this gives us the best chance to catch those responsible.”

The force said commercial vehicles were often seen as prime targets because of the volume of fuel in their tanks and because thefts took place while drivers were asleep in their vehicles.

In addition to the cost of the stolen fuel, fuel caps, tanks and fuel lines were sometimes damaged.
