Police shut A5 in both directions at Hinckley after lorry strikes bridge – as it happened

The busy A5 was shut in both directions at Hinckley this morning after a lorry hit the railway bridge, causing traffic problems throughout the area. Leicestershire Police[1] said in a post on X at about 6.45am today (Wednesday): “The A5 in Hinckley is closed from Nutts Lane roundabout to Dodwells Road roundabout.

“Please avoid the area if possible. Updates to follow. Thank you.”

A further post from National Highways confirmed the closure was “due to a lorry which has struck an overbridge and shed its load across the carriageway”.

As well as long queues on the A5 in both directions, there were traffic jams on the A47 heading towards the A5 from both directions. Rugby Road and Coventry Road in the town were also very busy with traffic finding alternative routes.

Updates on this incident are below.
