Where 20mph mobile speed cameras will be stationed in North Wales in October

The number of speeding fines dished out on 20mph roads in Wales has risen rapidly in recent months as enforcement has been stepped up. After the introduction of the 20mph limit in September 2023 there was initially a focus on education rather than issuing fines as drivers got used to the new speed.

But this changed in the spring and every month since April has seen a significant rise in the numbers pinged for breaking the 20mph limit in Wales. The latest figure for August showed a total of 7,958 offences over the month.[1]

This comes as a major review is underway that is expected to result in far more ‘exception’ roads being created. These are roads that will return to 30mph.

It follows new guidance from Welsh Government and consultations by local authorities. Councils are starting to publish lists of the roads they are currently assessing to consider whether a speed change is needed.

The list for Anglesey is here[4] and click on this link for the list for Flintshire[5].

But any changes will be later in the year or more likely early next year. Until then enforcement will continue on existing 20mph routes.

Here is a list of the 20mph roads where mobile Go Safe cameras will be this month.
