Woman dies on M56 after being hit by ‘number of vehicles’
Police closed both sides of the motorway for more than 12 hours

A woman has died after an accident on the M56[1]. Emergency services rushed to the scene on the M56 on Friday, October 5, at around 8.24pm between junctions 10 and 11 near Warrington[2].
The force confirmed officers arrived to find a woman had been hit by a number of vehicles on the carriageway. The 60-year-old woman from Northwich died at the scene.
The woman’s next of kin have been informed and a file will be prepared and passed to the coroner. Both sides of the carriageway were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident before being reopened at around 10.30am on Saturday morning.
A Cheshire Police[5] spokesperson said: “At around 8.24pm on Friday 5 October, officers responded to an incident between junctions 10 and junctions 11 on the M56 motorway near to Warrington. Officers attended the scene and found that a pedestrian had been struck by a number of vehicles.
“Sadly, the 60-year-old woman from Northwich died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and a casefile will be prepared for the coroner. Both sides of carriageway were subsequently closed whilst officers dealt with the incident, with the junction itself remaining closed until 10.30am the following morning.”

- Childline[12] (0800 1111) runs a helpline for children and young people in the UK. Calls are free and the number won’t show up on your phone bill.
- PAPYRUS[13] (0800 068 41 41) is an organisation supporting teenagers and young adults who are feeling suicidal.
- Mind[14] (0300 123 3393) is a charity providing advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding.
- Students Against Depression[15] is a website for students who are depressed, have a low mood or are having suicidal thoughts.
- Bullying UK[16] is a website for both children and adults affected by bullying.
- Amparo provides emotional and practical support for anyone who has been affected by a suicide. This includes dealing with police and coroners; helping with media enquiries; preparing for and attending an inquest and helping to access other, appropriate, local support services.
