A1 traffic diversion route today as crash sees road closed in Cambridgeshire
A traffic diversion is in place due to a closure on the A1 in Cambridgeshire today (Friday, November 1). A lorry has left the carriageway and overturned in a field between Wansford and Chesterton Junction.
Police, paramedics and firefighters are at the scene and the road is closed as a result. It is expected to remain shut for several hours and long delays are building in the area as a result.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “The A1 in Cambridgeshire is closed southbound between the Wansford Interchange ( Peterborough[1] (N), Leicester A47, Wansford) and Chesterton Junction (Orton, Alwalton Showground A605). This is due to a serious incident involving a Heavy Goods Vehicle which has left the road and overturned in to a field.

“Cambridgeshire[3] Police. Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue, East of England Ambulance Service all have units attending the incident. It is currently expected this closure will remain in place for several hours due to the severity of the incident.
“There are delays of 45 mins and 4 miles of congestion approaching the closure at Wansford.”

The following diversion route has been put in place by National Highways. Motorists are being urged to follow the hollow circle symbol on road signs in the area.
A National Highways spokesperson said: “Exit the A1 southbound at the Wansford Interchange At the roundabout at the end of the slip road take the first exit on to the A47 eastbound towards Peterborough
“Exit the A47 eastbound at J15 Thorpe Wood Interchange. At the J15 roundabout take the third exit on to the A1260 Nene Parkway southbound.
“Continue to the Hampton Roundabout with the A1139 and take the third exit on to the Fletton Parkway. Remain on the A1139 Fletton Parkway westbound to J17 of the A1(M) Fletton Parkway Interchange. Bear left to follow the fast link road to re-join the A1(M) southbound.”
