A30: Two people injured in serious collision between lorry and vans

A “serious collision” on the A30 today (Sunday) in Cornwall has left two people injured with the road set to be shut for “some time”. The A30[1] is closed in both directions between the A388 junctions of Liftondown and Launceston[2] (west). The accident happened between Tavistock Road and Trethorne Leisure Park according to traffic monitoring site Inrix.

The incident occurred at 7.30am this morning. It is understood that a lorry collided with two vans on the eastbound carriageway. Two people were injured.

Live updates on the incident can be found here.[3] Devon and Cornwall Police[4] said: “The A30 at Launceston is currently closed in both directions following a serious collision. Officers were called at 7.30am to reports of an incident on the eastbound carriageway.

“It’s reported that an artic lorry has collided with vehicles causing injuries to two people. The road is expected to be closed for some time while emergency services respond to this incident.” Superintendent Si Jenkinson, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said that a fuel spill had occurred as a result of the collision.

Mr Jenkinson advised motorists to consider “whether their journey is necessary”. Posting to X, formerly Twitter[5], Mr Jenkinson said: “Police are dealing with a serious collision on the A30 near Launceston. The road is currently closed in both directions as we deal with the incident and the resulting fuel spill.”

Mr Jenkinson later added: “We are receiving a significant number of road related incidents this morning including collisions and fallen trees. Our officers are responding to these reports but I would encourage people to consider whether their journey is necessary. “If you need to travel, please ensure you do so with care.

If your journey is not necessary, please consider not travelling at this time.” Diversions remain in place whilst the A30 remains closed. For road users travelling eastbound, the diversion route is as follows:

  • Leave the A30 at Pennygillam, take a minor road to Hurdon Road then the A388 towards Launceston

  • Follow the A388 round heading towards Liftondown and travel under the A30

  • Continue on New Road/Station Road towards Sprytown

  • Turn left at Sprytown and re-join the A30 at Stowford

The westbound diversion route for drivers is as follows:

  • Leave the A30 at Liftondown and follow the road around and turn left on ot the A388

  • Travel on the A388 towards Launceston

  • Turn right on to Tavistock Road (A388)

  • At the double roundabout take the exit signposted Okehampton (A30)/Holsworthy

  • Travel along Hurdon Road and then turn right onto a minor road

  • At the next roundabout, take the 4th exit and re-join the A30 westbound

HGVs are advised to consider using the A38[6] as a diversion.

National Highways added: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.

Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
