Devon court latest: 21 men and women charged with no let up in violence against police

Devon’s shoplifting epidemic and continuing violence against police both feature in the latest round-up from the magistrates’ courts. One man was sent to prison for four months for stealing Apple goods from a shop in Exeter.

Other punishments handed out include suspended sentences for a man who assaulted three police by beating and a booze ban for a defendant who sent a threatening message to a woman and assaulted her.

These are the latest cases to appear at the courts in Exeter, Newton Abbot and Barnstaple.

NOVEMBER 7

Jake Tansey, NFA, Torquay. Age: 29. On 13/06/2024 at Torquay assaulted a police officer by beating, criminal damage. Other offences of theft. Plea: Guilty. Prison for four weeks.

Matthew Marriott, Smythen Street, Exeter[1]. Age: 29. On 31/08/2024 at Alphington Sainsbury’s stole three Gillette razors. Plea: Guilty. Conditional discharge for 12 months. Compensation £90.

Claire Elizabeth Eaton, Uplowman, Tiverton[2]. Between 07/12/2021 and 01/02/2024 at Tiverton being the joint owner did cause to be executed works in relation to a listed building under a listed building consent application and failed to comply with various conditions attached to the permission. Contrary to sections 7, 9(2) and (4) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. Plea: Guilty. Discharged conditionally for three years. To pay costs of £1,734.

Owen James Robards Golding, Uplowman, Tiverton. Between 07/12/2021 and 01/02/2024 at Tiverton being the joint owner caused to be executed works in relation to a listed building under a listed building consent application and failed to comply with various conditions attached to the permission. Contrary to sections 7, 9(2) and (4) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. Plea: Guilty. Discharged conditionally for three years. To pay costs of £1,734.

New Wave Marine Limited, Marshall Road, Plympton. On 01/06/2020 at Willand Biogas site at Hide Market Road, Cullompton[3] allegedly contravened the duty imposed on by Regulation 4(1) of the Work At Height Regulations 2005, in that it failed to ensure that work at height at Willand Biogas site at Hide Market Road, was properly planned, appropriately supervised and carried out in a manner which was so far as was reasonably practicable safe. Contrary to section 33(1)(c) and Schedule 3A of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. Adjourned to 12/12/2024 for plea.

Winston Reed, Templeton, Tiverton. On 01/06/2020 at Willand Biogas site at Hide Market Road, Cullompton, being a director of Willand O&M Limited allegedly failed to discharge the duty subject to section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 namely it contravened regulation 3(1)(a) of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, by failing to ensure that no person carrying out a work activity – in this instance a live overhead power line – without reasonable and suitable precautions in place to prevent injury. Contrary to section 33(1)(c) and Schedule 3A of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. Adjourned to 12/12/2024 for plea.

NOVEMBER 11

Sophie Glanville, St Leonard’s Road, Honiton[4]. Age: 29. On 27/08/2024 at Honiton assaulted a police officer by beating. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Unpaid work for 40 hours. Compensation £250.

Simon Sanders, Heavitree Road, Exeter. Age: 20. On 30/08/2024 at Mincinglake Road, Exeter assaulted three police officers by beating. Also an offence of possessing a knife. Plea: Guilty. 16 weeks suspended for 18 months. Compensation £300.

Simon Bishop, NFA Torquay[5]. Age: 44. On 08/11/2024 at Exeter possess with intent to supply heroin. Plea: Guilty. Committed to Exeter Crown Court for sentence on 09/12/2024.

Dean Snell, East Street, Paignton[6]. Age: 49. Between 01/10/2023 and 30/11/2023 at Cullompton stalking of a female. Plea: Guilty. Adjourned to 13/12/2024 for pre-sentence report.

NOVEMBER 14

Aaron Davis, Slade Valley Road, Ilfracombe[7]. Age: 35. Between 01/02/2024 and 02/02/2024 at Rochford sent an offensive communication. On 09/01/2024 assaulted a female by beating. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. Abstain from alcohol for 120 days. Unpaid work for 120 hours. Restraining order.

Bailey Palmer, Haven Road, Dawlish[8]. Age: 22. On 04/04/2024 at Exeter drug driving and whilst disqualified. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 18 months. Unpaid work for 200 hours.

Lukas Gricius, Furzehill, Sidbury. Age: 30. On 30/04/2024 at Exmouth[9] drove while controlled drug above limit. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for 36 months. Fine £230.

Steve Trower, NFA, Bideford[10]. Age: 44. On 30/05/2024 at Rope walk Bideford used threatening or abusive words or behaviour with intent. Possess heroin and resist an officer. Plea: Guilty. Four weeks in prison. Compensation £100.

David Buceanu, HMP Maidstone. Age: 27. On 25/06/2024 at Exeter stole Apple[11] items from O2 store. Plea: Guilty. Four months in prison.

Nicholas Driver, c/o Park Way, Exmouth. Age: 25. On 04/08/2024 at South Street assaulted a male by beating and criminal damage to a taxi. Plea: Guilty. Prison for 12 weeks. Compensation £450.

Alex Masters, Manley Close, Whimple. Age: 49. On 25/08/2024 and other dates at Sidmouth[12] made off without paying for fuel, drove without insurance, stole from a shop and drove when alcohol over the limit. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 12 months. 15 rehabilitation days, unpaid work for 50 hours.

Nicholas Driver, NFA Exeter. Age: 25. On 25/10/2024 at RD&E Hospital assaulted two police officers by beating and used threatening words of behaviour. Plea: Guilty. Prison for 24 weeks. Compensation of £200.

Daniel Evetts, Oaklands Road, Newton Abbot[13]. Age: 38. On 25/10/2024 at Barnstaple[14] used violence to secure entry to premises, common assault by causing female to fear violence, sent an offensive message. Plea: Guilty. Community order for two years. Exclusion from area in North Devon[15] and electronic monitoring. Rehabilitation activity for 30 days. Restraining order.

Wayne Stephenson, Hawkins Road, Exeter. Age: 33. On 27/10/2024 at Stoke Hill drove when alcohol above the limit. Without licence and insurance. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified fro 18 months. Fine £140.

Toby Derges, Liberty Way, Exeter. Age: 22. On 27/10/2024 at Stoke Hill, Exeter, drove when alcohol above the limit. Plea: Guilty. Community order for two months. Curfew with electronic monitoring. Disqualified for two years.

Cameron Kouassi Kan, Gregory Close, Tiverton. Age: 26. On 17/12/2023 at Fairby Close, Tiverton assaulted a police officer by beating him. Common assault on an officer and criminal damage to a police van. Plea: Guilty. Community order for 18 months. Abstain from alcohol for 90 days. Rehabilitation activity for 15 days. Compensation £174.
