A HGV crossed onto the southbound carriageway and collided with a number of other vehicles
One person has died following a lorry crash on the M6 and a “number of” others are seriously injured. A full road closure is in place after a HGV travelling northbound crossed onto the southbound carriageway and collided with a number of other vehicles at around 11.20am this morning, Wednesday November 6, Lancashire Police confirmed.
There are “severe delays” between J33 A6 Preston Lancaster Road (Lancaster South / Garstang) to J32 M55 (Broughton Interchange). Police say the road will be closed for “a number of hours”. Two air ambulances were spotted landing at the scene.
According to traffic alert site Inrix, all traffic was held at 11.30am. It reads: “M6 in both directions closed, severe delays due to multi-vehicle accident from J33 A6 Preston Lancaster Road (Lancaster South / Garstang) to J32 M55 (Broughton Interchange).

“Congestion to J31 (Samlesbury) for traffic heading North and J34 (Halton interchange) heading South. Routes through Lancaster, Galgate and Garstang are heavily congested, along with the North of Preston.”
A statement from Lancashire Police said: “We told you earlier that the M6 motorway was closed and we wanted to give you a bit more information. We were called at about 11.20am today to reports of a serious collision on the motorway close to junction 33.
“The collision involved an HGV travelling northbound which crossed onto the southbound carriageway and collided with a number of other vehicles. Very sadly the collision has resulted in one fatality and a number of other serious injuries. Our thoughts are with all those affected at this time.
“Emergency services remain at the scene and the motorway remains closed in both directions between junctions 32 and 33 while we continue to deal with the incident. The closure is likely to stay in place for some considerable time so please check before you travel as diversions are in place.”
