National Highways North West said resurfacing work and barrier repairs had been completed after a fatal crash which has left a lorry driver dead[9].
The works at Junction 33 had closed the southbound stretch completely from 11.20am on Wednesday 6 November.
Shortly after 12noon on Thursday (7 November) two lanes of the M6 southbound between Junction 33 and Junction 32 was re-opened.
One lane remains closed on both the northbound and southbound stretch of the motorway[11] as repairs continue to the central reservation.
Ten vehicles were involved in the crash which claimed the life of a man in his 50s.
Lancashire Police say two other people, a Ford Transit driver in his 40s and a Suzuki Swift driver in her 40s have suffered serious injuries.
The M6 northbound between Junction 32 and Junction 33 re-opened around 4am this morning.
A police spokesperson said: “Many of you have been asking for updates following the closure of part of the M6 yesterday and we can now let you know that both Northbound and Southbound routes are now open again.
“Lane 3 Southbound however remains closed at this time for barrier repair, so please be aware that traffic may be heavier than usual.
“If you have a satnav or mobile maps app, we’d recommend mapping your journey before setting off and leaving extra time to get to your destination.
“Drive safely and thank you for your patience.”
The A6 between Garstang and Broughton had been experiencing severe congestion throughout Wednesday and Thursday as a result of the crash, with Preston becoming gridlocked[12] as drivers tried to find alternative routes across the city.
