New information after 2 missing men found dead in pickup truck in St. Joseph River
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office says two previously missing men were found dead on Wednesday afternoon inside a pickup truck that deputies say crashed into the St. Joseph River just outside of Elkhart.
Police say a Dodge Ram pickup truck was discovered in the river around 3:45 p.m. in the area of State Road 120 just west of County Road 19. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office initially said in a news release on Wednesday night that the crash happened at that time, but clarified in an updated news release Thursday morning that was actually the time the crash site was discovered.
The Elkhart County Coroner’s Office and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office say they are now working to put a time frame together of when exactly the truck crashed into the river. While the exact time of the crash remains unclear, police say the pickup truck was heading east on State Road 120 when it ran off the road, traveled down a ditch and ended up in the river.
Rescue crews recovered the bodies of two men from the truck. They’ve been identified as 30-year-old Theo Bean of Elkhart and 39-year-old Tireno Washington of Bristol.
According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, Bean and Washington had been missing since early Sunday morning. Family members have been notified of their passing.
The Elkhart County Coroner’s Office says autopsies will be conducted on Bean and Washington on Friday morning.
