Preston is fast becoming gridlocked as a full closure of the M6 between Junction 32 and Junction 33 kicks in.
A lorry has overturned close to Junction 33[12] which has seen Lancashire Police close the motorway in full between the Broughton interchange and Junction 33 for Garstang.
Police say the motorway is likely to be ‘closed for a number of hours’. The crash took place at 11.20am on Wednesday (6 November).
Pictures sent to Blog Preston show a lorry overturned across the central reservation and a number of other lorries and cars involved in the crash.
An eyewitness told Blog Preston they had seen fuel leaking from the vehicle.
It is not known at this stage whether anyone has been hurt in the crash.
Surrounding routes are now becoming rapidly congested with slow-moving traffic on the M6 northbound from Junction 30 of the M6 up to Junction 32 for Broughton.
All traffic is then diverted off to join the A6 and travel up through Broughton and Garstang to rejoin the motorway at Junction 33 northbound.
Drivers are also coming off the M6 at Junction 31 and trying to work there way through Ribbleton and Fulwood which is causing congestion on Garstang Road and city centre routes such as Ringway.
The A6 itself is heavily congested throughout the route from Garstang down to Broughton and Lancaster is gridlocked.
Preston North End has warned fans attending this evening’s game against Sunderland which has an 8pm kick-off at Deepdale to anticipate delays to their journeys.
National Highways North West is listing the expected re-opening time for the M6 as between 4.30pm to 5pm.
