South West fatal crash in Storm Bert as highways worker killed
A man has tragically died following a serious multi-vehicle crash in the South West during Storm Bert. The crash in Cornwall took place on the A30[1] at Launceston[2] yesterday morning (Sunday, November 24). Devon and Cornwall Police[3] said two highways maintenance vehicles and a lorry were involved in the crash.
It took place heading westbound near the Pennygillam off slip at around 7.30am[4]. A man in his 50s, from one of the highway maintenance vehicles, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Sadly he died later yesterday evening.
His next of kin have been informed and will be supported by specialist officers, as DevonLive reports.[5] Another person travelling in the highway maintenance vehicles was taken to hospital. However, their injuries are not life-threatening.
A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Devon and Cornwall Police said: “The A30 was closed for a number of hours while an investigation and recovery work took place at the scene.
Officers from the Roads Policing Team would like to thank the public for their patience whilst the road was closed.
“Anyone with any relevant information and dash-cam footage which may assist the investigation is asked contact police via our website or by calling 101 quoting log 277 24/11/24.”
