A1 live updates as serious crash closes busy Nottinghamshire road for ‘some time’

A pensioner has died after being hit by a vehicle on a busy Nottinghamshire[1] road, closing it for several hours. The victim, an 84-year-old man, was walking near Applegreen Muskham Services on the A1 when he was struck at around 7.14am today (Wednesday, December 18). Nottinghamshire Police[2] said he died at the scene after the collision, despite the best efforts of emergency workers.

The southbound carriageway remains closed between North Muskham and Carlton-on-Trent as investigation work is carried out by officers. National Highways, posting to X (formerly Twitter), said the carriageway[3] would likely be closed until late afternoon. The northbound carriageway was also temporarily closed.

The closure, which was lengthened to help divert motorists, has caused long delays. Sergeant Mark Baker, of Nottinghamshire Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was an upsetting incident for everyone involved and we are currently working to understand what happened. "The man's family has now been informed and our thoughts are with them at what we know will be a very difficult time." Police have asked witnesses to call 101 if they have any helpful information, quoting incident 82 of December 18.
