A130 serious crash: two arrested after police chase

Police were called to two suspects seen with knives at an address in Althorne before leaving in a car at about 1.10pm today. The suspects' car was seen by police officers who followed it travelling in the direction of the A130. A chase took place before there was a crash between the car and a van at 1.50pm on the northbound carriageway of the A130.

All four people in the vehicles - two in the car and two in the van - sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for further treatment. The driver of the car has sustained potentially life-changing injuries and was airlifted to hospital. Both the driver and passenger in the car have also been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary.

Essex Police are still working with paramedics and firefighters at the scene and this section of the A130 remains closed northbound while officers carry out our investigation and make the road safe. Officers expect it to remain closed for several hours. The southbound carriageway has now re-opened.

Drivers should check before they travel and plan accordingly.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Thanks again for your patience while the emergency services complete their work."
