A38 crash: Woman trapped in car as major road remains shut

A woman was cut from a car following a serious crash on the A38 this afternoon, Friday, December 20. The crash involved two vehicles, a car and a lorry, and took place heading westbound at Haldon Hill at around 2.45pm. Emergency services, including police officers and fire services, arrived at the scene.

The fire crew extricated the woman using hydraulic equipment and she was conveyed to the hospital by ambulance after sustaining injuries. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue[1] Service shared: "Fire Control received a call to attend a road traffic collision involving one car and one heavy goods vehicle and mobilised crews from Middlemoor, Exeter[2] and Danes Castle, Exeter. "On arrival crews confirmed that there was a two vehicle road traffic collision involving an HGV and a small vehicle with one female casualty still within the small vehicle being assessed by ambulance crews.

Crews extricated the female casualty using hydraulic equipment and was conveyed to hospital by ambulance." The road remained closed as of 8pm, and traffic is still being diverted. Police have warned of extended traffic delays due to the A38 collision and the ongoing closure of the M5 following an earlier trailer fire incident.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: "The A38 at Haldon Hill has been closed southbound following a two-vehicle collision. The incident was reported to have occurred at around 2.45pm today (20 December). Traffic is being diverted onto the A380.

One person is believed to have sustained injuries and is being taken to hospital.

"Drivers should expect traffic disruption in the area due to the partial closure of the M5[3] southbound following an earlier fire.

Please drive with care and allow plenty of time for your journey."
