Couple killed as they walk home from carol service in Norfolk

A couple in their 80s have died after being hit by a car as they walked home from a carol service. The pair, named locally as Campbell and Sheila Welsh, had left the service at All Saints Church in High Kelling at 4.30pm on Sunday when they were struck by a Mini while crossing the A148 back to their car. Emergency services were swiftly called out to the scene and closed the road.

An air ambulance was also spotted in the area and a fire crew assisted the ambulance service. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the couple, both in their 80s, were pronounced dead at the scene. A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and taken for questioning.

Police have urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident or saw the Mini driving to come forward with information.

A statement from Norfolk Police last night said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in High Kelling yesterday (Sunday 22 December) afternoon. The collision happened at 4.20pm on the A148 at the junction with Avenue Road when a white BMW Mini One collided with two pedestrians. "Sadly both pedestrians, a man and a woman both aged in their 80s, died at the scene.

The driver of the Mini, a man in his 50s, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he remains. "The road was closed whilst emergency services attended the scene including and ambulance.

It reopened just after 1am today (Monday 23 December).

Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the manner of driving of the Mini prior to the collision happening."
