Cricket umpire and ‘legend’ among 25 Leicester Mercury death notices

Touching tributes at one of the most difficult times of the years for the recently bereaved have been paid in this week's Leicester Mercury[1] death notices. This collection of notices honour those who have died in the run-up to Christmas time. This week's collection features 25 notices from the recent days, weeks and months.

The list includes an arden cricket fan and umpire who was loved by many. Tributes have also been paid to a man hailed a "legend" and others who died suddenly. Those listed are in alphabetical order.

Glyn David BAXTER[3] Passed away on 6th December 2024 aged 77 years. Beloved husband to Rosemarie, adored father to Rachel, Andrew and Louise and much loved grandad and great grandad.

Glyn's funeral service will be held at St Pius X R C Church, Narborough LE19 2DF on 23rd December 2024 at 1pm followed by Burial at Frolesworth Road Cemetery, Broughton Astley, LE9 6PG. Jane spent the last 4 months of her life in a Colchester nursing home to be near her daughter. Jane's ashes will be scattered in Wales; her heart never left Wales despite her 60+ years in Leicester. Douglas John (John) HARROP[10]

(John) of Cosby, forever an ardent cricket fan, former local umpire and player for Leicester Nomads, Leicestershire County, Cosby, Hinckley Town and latterly the 'Silver Foxes', passed away with family by his side at LOROS, following a short illness, on the 26th November 2024, aged 77 years. Much-loved and greatly missed by daughter Emma, her partner Glyn and his little cricketer Finlay; a proud 'Opi', too, to Luca and Morgan and beloved Brother, Brother-in-law, Uncle, Great-Uncle, Cousin, God-Father and Friend; we treasure the memories. Gwendoline leaves behind her cherished Daughter Clare Bloomer, Grand-Daughters Celia and Matilda and three beloved Sisters, Joan, Dawn and Willow.

She was a woman with a zest for life, a deep love for her family and a passion for theatre, travel and reading. Gwen was adored by all who knew her and her bright spirit touched the lives of many. Now, she is reunited with her beloved Husband, Stanley Raymond Sharpe, with whom she shared a lifetime of love.
