Cyclist left with life-changing injures after hit-and-run crash in Birmingham as man arrested

A cyclist has been left with life-changing injuries after he was struck by a car driver in a hit-and-rush crash. The serious crash happened on Portland Road in Birmingham, near the border with Smethwick[1], at around 7.10pm last night, November 4. The collision involved the cyclist, aged in his 20s, and a black Audi A7.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after the Audi driver fled the scene, police said. A West Midlands Police[2] spokesperson said: "We have made an arrest after a man was seriously injured following a collision in Birmingham[3]. "We were called at around 7.10pm last night to Portland Road to a collision involving a black Audi A7 and a cyclist. The cyclist, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with potentially life changing injuries. "The driver of the Audi fled the scene.

Following further enquiries, we recovered the vehicle and detained a 24-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving." Det Sgt Paul Hughes added: "We are appealing for any witnesses in the area at the time to come forward. If you have any CCTV footage or dash cam footage then please send it to us.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 6.51pm to reports of a collision on Portland Road in Smethwick Birmingham and sent an ambulance to the scene. On arrival, crews were made aware of a collision involving a car and a cyclist. The cyclist, a man, was treated by ambulance staff for serious injuries and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital."[5][6][7][8] Information can be given by calling police on 101, quoting crime reference 4311 of December 4, or by emailing SCIU@westmidlands.police.uk.
