Horror on Devon’s roads as four lives are claimed

Roads across Devon have been hit by a number of serious crashes over the last week[1]. Tragically, four people lost their lives while others have sustained major injuries. Two young men died in a crash in Okehampton and a woman passed away in Plymouth[2].

Meanwhile, an 11-year-old boy was badly hurt in a collision with a car in Brixham, a pedestrian suffered injuries after a HGV crash on the A38 and a cyclist is fighting for his life after a crash in Exeter. And yesterday it emerged a man passed away a week after a quad biking accident. The roads can be particularly busy this time of year and conditions can be made more dangerous by ice, flooding and stormy weather[3].

Boy hit by car in Brixham

A boy suffered a serious injury in a car crash in Brixham[6] on Thursday morning, December 19. Devon and Cornwall Police were called to Higher Ranscombe Road at 8.25am.

The crash involved a car and an 11-year-old boy. The boy was taken to hospital with a serious arm injury. For the full story, click here.[7]

Driver arrested after woman dies in Plymouth crash

A driver was arrested after a woman died in a crash on Tuesday, December 17. Devon and Cornwall Police[8] were called to the collision on Ham Drive, in Plymouth[9], at around 5.20pm.

The crash involved a grey Audi and a silver Ford Fiesta. The driver of the Ford, a Plymouth woman aged in her 60s, died. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Two young men die in Okehampton crash

Two young men tragically died in a crash in Okehampton[13] on Tuesday morning, December 17. Devon and Cornwall Police were called to the B3260 at around 3.15am[14]. The crash involved a blue MG ZS.

Police said a man, aged 20 and from Chagford, has been arrested after the fatal collision. For the full story, click here.[15]

Air ambulance lands at serious car and motorbike crash

A motorcyclist suffered a serious leg injury in a crash with a car at Woodbury Common on Monday, December 16. The collision took place on the B3180 at 3.35pm and the air ambulance was called.

The road was closed in both directions over rush hour. It eventually reopened after causing lengthy delays in the area. For the full story, click here.[16]

Pedestrian taken to hospital after crash with HGV on A38

A pedestrian was rushed to hospital after a crash with a HGV on the A38 on Monday, December 16.

Devon and Cornwall Police was called to the collision near Ashburton at around 1.45pm. The A38 was shut heading eastbound and motorists were hit with long delays. It eventually reopened later in the day.

Cyclist fighting for life after crash with Audi in Exeter

A cyclist has been left fighting for his life after a serious crash in Exeter[18]. The collision, involving a black Audi Q5 and a cyclist, took place on Bridge Road, near the junction with Countess Wear Road at around 3.30pm on Friday, December 13. The road was closed while emergency services attended the scene.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the cyclist, a man in his 70s from Exeter, suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth for treatment. For the full story, click here.[19][20]

Taxi crashes into wall in Exeter

A taxi ploughed into a wall in Exeter, preventing a bus stop from being used on Saturday, December 14. The area was cordoned off by police.

The vehicle appears to have rammed into the wall on Hele Road, a short distance from Exeter[21] College and St David's Church. The vehicle, a black Skoda used as a private hire vehicle, was left facing the church with significant damage to the bonnet. For the full story, click here[22].

Devon quad bike rider dies a week after crash

An elderly man has died after a quad bike crash near Crediton[23]. The collision, which involved a red Honda quad bike, took place on the B3220[24] near Coldridge at 11.40am on Thursday, December 12.

Devon and Cornwall Police have since confirmed that the rider of the bike, a 70-year-old man, died in hospital yesterday (Thursday, December 19).
