M61 shut last night after concern for welfare call

The M61 was initially closed both ways between junction 2, M60 and junction 4, Little Hulton near Bolton. Police opened the northbound carriageway soon after, but the southbound carriageway remained closed until after 7pm. National Highways traffic officers were in attendance assisting with road closures.

"It was a person in crisis on a bridge - resulting in the closure of the southbound between 5.50pm and 7.30pm." Those caught up in the traffic were offered a diversion route via the exit slip onto a A6 Salford Road through Little Hulton and Walkden. The incident was cleared by around 7.30pm last night.

Traffic on the motorways was compounded by congestion around the Trafford Centre where there had been an accident.
