Pregnant woman left ‘shaken’ after car rammed by hit and run driver on M60

A pregnant woman was left 'shaken' and in tears after her car was rammed into during traffic on the M60[1]. Mum-of-one Laura McKenzie, 31, from Hyde, was stuck in slow moving traffic close to junction 22 following a crash nearby on November 3. She said at around 7.15pm, as she was travelling in the third lane, a car in the outside lane next to her indicated they would be moving over.

The car behind signalled to let them in. However, Laura, who is 14 weeks pregnant with her second child, felt a 'crunch' after the car then struck the back of her Mitsubishi as it moved over, before 'accelerating' and nearly crushing her between the vehicle in front. "I was going at about 12mph, we were in slow moving traffic.

I was in the third lane when the driver in the fourth lane indicated to get behind me," she said. "As he moved over he accelerated, hit the back of my car and started pushing me forward. I heard the crunch and put my breaks on as hard as I could, but he kept pushing me towards the car in front.

"I could hear my back bumper being crushed. I panicked and indicated to move over on to the hard shoulder, but he just kept driving. He didn't stop."

Laura was eventually able to navigate herself through two other lanes of traffic to reach the hard shoulder.

Alone at the side of the road, she began to panic when the hit and run driver then continued to drive away. Then, worry turned to hear baby. The crash, although only causing external damage, snapped off her exhaust pipe and left her with a hole in her rear bumper.

After going to hospital to get herself and unborn baby checked over, she then spent an agonising 10 hours in A&E. "It was so dark and I could barely see anything," she said. "I called my partner and then 999. I didn't know what to do.

I was so distressed and couldn't calm myself down. "My exhaust had been ripped off and by bumper was damaged. The traffic police came out to the scene, but I was really shaken.

I couldn't stop thinking about what could have happened. "The police advised they needed to get my car off the motorway. Nobody else stopped to help and they could see how distressed I was.

I was crying. "I got to A&E for 8.15pm and we didn't leave until 6.30 the next morning. I have been advised of strict rest, and have to monitor for any bleeding.

I was worried for my baby because I was panicking more and more and was all on my own." Laura, who has since reported the incident to the police, said the car involved is a silver Mercedes estate. It is believed to be the C180 model with a 59 registration plate.

She is urging any witnesses to contact the police on 101.
