Scotland’s most lucrative speed trap revealed as camera makes more than £2m
SCOTLAND'S most profitable speed traps have been revealed, with one hotspot raking in over GBP2million in fines. Data from Police[1] Scotland[2] identified the highest-earning speed camera in the country, located on the M80 offslip near Glasgow[3], where it merges with the M8.

The A90 between Dundee[6] and Stonehaven is the second most lucrative spot, with 3,538 drivers[7] caught speeding in the first nine months of the year. This location has been the top earner since 2021, issuing 20,811 fixed penalty notices over the last four years and generating GBP2million.

Most of the A90 has a 70mph limit, but over half of the speeding offences occur at Laurencekirk, where the limit drops to 50mph. Liam Kerr, Conservative MSP for the North-East, told the Scottish Daily Mail: "The total number of drivers speeding on the A90 is simply far too high.
"But the truth is the money generated isn't going back to improve these roads, or motorist safety[8]. "The A90 has more farm entrances and junctions per mile than any other A-class road. "And we know that the 50mph limit at Laurencekirk generates lots of income for the SNP government.
But people there have waited more than 15 years for the vital, life-saving junction that residents want. "The years of dither and delay by the SNP means average speed cameras are filling in for actual safety improvements."
What are the new AI speed cameras and will they be able to identify drivers? The average speed camera on the A9 between Dunblane and Inverness[9] also cashes in, with 7,414 fines issued last year. The mobile[10] speed camera on the A90 at Burnshot Lane in Edinburgh[11] is the top earner in its category.
Roadworks continue to generate revenue, with TASCAR registering 4,163 speeding drivers on the M8 between Paisley[12] and Govan in 2022, and 1,646 on the A9 in Bankfoot, Perthshire.
Drivers caught speeding face a fixed penalty notice of GBP100, which can rise to GBP2,500, and three points added to their licence[13].
A Transport[14] Scotland[15] spokesman said: "Cameras are deployed where they have the greatest potential to reduce injury[16] collisions and where there is evidence of both collisions and speeding."
