Speed camera caught motorist doing 89mph over the speed limit in Wrexham

Freedom of information figures, obtained by the Leader, has shown the highest speeds clocked by speed cameras in Wrexham and Flintshire over the past five years.  The information also shows which roads the speeding offences took place on.  In Wrexham, the highest speed recorded since 2019 was one driver doing 139mph in a 50mph stretch of the A483 between Gresford and the B&Q roundabout. 

Three of the six highest speed were recorded on the A483, with one on the A5 and two on the A525 between Wrexham and Whitchurch. 

The highest record speeds each year are as follows:

  • 2019 - 112mph in 70mph limit A483 Dual Carriageway Junction 7 Rossett.
  • 2020 - 78mph in 50mph limit on A525 Ffordd y Eglwys Wen, Redbrook Maelor, Wrexham.
  • 2021 - 81mph in 40mph limit on A525 Whitchurch Road, Bangor-is-y-Coed, Wrexham.
  • 2022 - 106mph in 70mph limit on A483 Dual Carriageway Junction 7 Rossett.
  • 2023 - 139mph in 50mph limit on A483 between Junction 6-5 Wrexham.
  • 2024 - 103mph in 60mph limit on A5 Halton, Wrexham.

In Flintshire, the highest speed clocked by a camera was 101mph by a motorist travelling in a 50mph zone on the A494 between St David's Park and Deeside.  Between 2019 and 2022, the highest speeds were all clocked on the A548 Sealand Road, with the highest being 97mph. 

The other highest speeds clocked include: 

  • 2019 - 81mph in 50mph limit on A548 Westbound Sealand Road.
  • 2020 - 97mph in 50mph limit on A548 Eastbound Sealand Road.
  • 2021 - 93mph in 50mph limit on A548 Eastbound Sealand Road.
  • 2022 - 85mph in 50mph limit on A548 Westbound Sealand Road.
  • 2023 - 101mph in 50mph limit on A494 Eastbound, St David's Park to Deeside Industrial Est.
  • 2024 - 97mph in 60mph limit on A494 Mold bypass by Broncoed-Isaf, Flintshire.

A spokesperson for Go Safe said: "Excessive speed is one of the largest contributory factors to collisions on our roads. Higher speed collisions often means a higher severity and a devastating impact on families.

"GoSafe will continue to use the "4E" method to improve road safety; engineering, education, engagement, and enforcement.

Enforcement is always the last option and is considered where the risk to people is highest.

"We'll continue to use these methods to reduce the number of people killed or injured on Welsh roads."
