Speeding driver caught at 108mph on A82 ahead of speed cameras being scrapped

Speed cameras on the A82 between Luss and Tarbet are being removed -- despite catching drivers at speeds of up to 108mph. The average speed cameras caught 131 speeding[1] drivers between September and November this year, with drivers caught at speeds of up to 108mph. The scenic Dunbartonshire[2] route along the banks of Loch Lomond has a speed limit of 60mph, and police[3] said the cameras were introduced following "an increase in speed and injury collisions" on the route.

The average speed cameras have now been removed, despite there being no injury collisions on the accident-prone stretch during the deployment beginning August this year. There have been consistent injury collisions on this stretch of road between August and November for the last three years, with nine injury collisions, with five causing serious injuries and one resulting in a fatality. Police Scotland called the cameras "an invaluable tool for improving driver behaviour on routes which previously lacked the infrastructure to install permanent fixed cameras," but there is no indication as yet as to whether average speed cameras will return.

The route will once again be enforced by a mobile enforcement van. Alan Bowater, West Safety Camera Area Manager, said: "We would take this opportunity to remind drivers that speed limits are in place for the safety of all road users. Driving above the speed limit can have serious consequences for everyone.

"Police Scotland continue to actively encourage every vehicle to remain within the speed limits for the road, whether that be through local policing or the use of safety cameras."
