Two lanes close on M5 after HGV and van crash near Worcester
The accident happened on the Southbound Lanes between Junction 5 and Junction 6 at around 12.30pm on December 23 between a HGV and a van. The incident lead to delays of up to an hour and congestion of more than 8 miles on one of the busiest days of the year for the motorway. Northbound lanes were also affected as commuters slowed down to take a look at the aftermath.
At the time a National Highways spokesperson said: "Lanes 3 and 4 are now CLOSED on the M5 southbound between J5 Droitwich and J6 Worcester due to a collision involving a Heavy Goods Vehicle and a van. "Police are on scene. "There are currently delays of 50 mins and approximately 5 miles of congestion."
Recovery vehicles removed the van and the lorry around two hours later and all four lanes of the M5 were reopened.
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police confirmed their attendance and said: "Police were called at 12.30pm to a collision involving a lorry and car on the M5 between junction 6 and junction 7."
