Van driver in ‘serious condition’ after crash shut A50

A van driver has been left in a 'serious condition' in hospital after a crash with a truck shut the A50[1]. Two ambulances were among the resources sent to the scene near Cresswell last night which left the eastbound carriageway shut for several hours. Emergency services were scrambled to reports of a smash between a van and a truck just after 7.05pm last night.

Today West Midlands Ambulance Service, which sent two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a North Staffordshire BASICS doctor, and the critical care car from Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, have confirmed the van driver was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital 'in a serious condition'. Meanwhile two heroic off-duty nurses were also on the scene last night supporting the casualty. A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: "When ambulance staff arrived on the scene they found a HGV which had collided with a van.

A man, who was out of the van, was assessed and found with serious injuries. The team of ambulance staff worked quickly together to provide advanced trauma care at the scene to stabilise his condition before being conveyed on blue lights to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for further emergency care." During the height of the incident police urged motorists to avoid the A50 as they dealt with what officers described as a 'serious collision'.

The road, which had been shut between Blythe Bridge and Uttoxeter, reopened at around 2am this morning.

We have contacted Staffordshire Police for a statement on the collision.
