The fire spread to the van, but the fire service has now put out both blazes. The incident happened on the westbound carriageway between junction 11 at Reading and junction 12 at Theale.

National Highways said that both vehicles "are completely burnt out so recovery will be protracted".

It added that it would then need to assess the carriageway to see if it will need resurfacing.

A diversion is currently in place and National Highways said it expects the motorway to remain shut until at least 9pm.
