Lorry overturns on A19 in Storm Éowyn winds on northbound road
A lorry has overturned on the A19 in high winds as Storm Eowyn continues to cause disruption in the North East. Emergency services were called to an area of the A19 close to the A690 Herrington Interchange in Sunderland[1] at 10.20am on Friday morning. A lorry overturned, with traffic left queuing back to the Seaham Grange Roundabout in Seaham, County Durham[2].
The road was closed northbound between the A1018 and the A690 and motorists were encouraged to find alternative routes. One lane is now passable by traffic. It is understood that no-one has been seriously injured in the incident.
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police[3] said: "At 10.20am today (Friday) we received a report that a vehicle had overturned on the A19 northbound close to the junction with Herrington Interchange in Sunderland. Emergency services are in attendance and no-one is believed to have been seriously injured. "A section of the road is currently closed to allow for recovery of the vehicle involved.
Motorists should use alternative routes where possible." As well as the overturned lorry on the A19, Storm Eowyn has caused disruption on the Metro[4], trains to be cancelled[5], and flights to be grounded[6] due to the high winds.
