A stretch of the M20 has reopened following a police incident after reports someone had fallen from a bridge and was struck by a vehicle. Officers have confirmed they are investigating a "serious collision" and initially closed the coastbound carriageway between Junction 8 for Maidstone and Junction 10 for Ashford.
The incident occurred at about 1pm close to Junction 9 under A28 Canterbury Road bridge in Kennington, which was also shut off both ways. At about 6.15pm the motorway reopened between Junction 8 at Maidstone and Junction 9 at Ashford.
The section between Junctions 9 and 10 finally reopened shortly after 9pm. A police spokesman said: "We are currently at the scene of a serious collision near Junction 9 of the M20 at Ashford. "The motorway is expected to remain closed for a number of hours."
