Shock after car clocked by police camera van doing almost 90mph in 30mph zone
On Saturday (January 25), at around 10am, a speed camera van, operated by Northumbria Police, recorded a BMW M5 being driven at 89mph on West Road in the West End of Newcastle. After clocking the dangerously high speeds, Northumbria Police say they began enquiries to locate the vehicle in question and by 1.20pm had traced it to Denton Road, also in the West End. At the scene, police arrested a man in his 30s in connection with the report.
He has now been charged with dangerous driving and speeding and is due to appear in court next month. Following the incident, Northumbria Police have issued a warning to other drivers about their speed and have reiterated why speed cameras are needed in the region. A spokesperson for the police force said: "Our speed camera vans are there for a reason and remain a vital tool in helping us to maintain safe roads across our communities.

"All motorists and bikers should know that speeding is something that can greatly increase the chances of harm to other road users and pedestrians, while also putting you at risk of being arrested and charged with criminal offences.
"Please be aware of speed limits at all times when behind the wheel and help ensure our region remains among the safest areas to drive in in the country."
